AT HOME These plants are semi- hardy. Prefers a cool or warm climate where temperatures remain between 15ºC to 26ºC. Best to bring indoors when the temperature falls below 10ºC. Keeping it in a cooler environment in the dormant months may encourage blooms come spring.
LIGHT These cacti prefer lots of sun, at least five hours of direct sun daily. Young plants may need shade protection from afternoon sun.
Indoors a south facing window is ideal. Outdoors seat them in a place where they will get plenty of sun exposure, but protect them from intense, peak afternoon sun.
WATER This cactus species is fairly drought-resistant but appreciates watering in summer. However, it cannot tolerate standing water. Good advice for watering whortleberry cactus is to water thoroughly once and then let the soil dry out before watering again. Also, avoid overhead watering. Reduce the watering to only a bare minimum in winter to prevent the soil from being cold and wet for extended periods of time, as it can lead to root loss. For best growth, feed your blue myrtle with a specialized cactus fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer seasons.
LOVE In the optimal summer conditions, small cream colored flowers can appear across the top of the cacti’s body, succeeded by a tiny very sweet, edible, plum-like fruit.
